Review: Red Pitch

This dynamic one-act from Tyrell Williams finds aspiring footballers Joey (Emeka Sesay), Bilal (Kedar Williams-Stirling), and Omz (Francis Lovehall; Toyin Omari-Kinch for our performance) at a multi-pronged inflection point. GCSEs, the gentrification of their housing estate, and most importantly try-outs for local club QPR hang in the air as the trio practice at the estate’s titular Red Pitch. Staged with elegant utility at the cozy in-the-round @sohoplace, the audience is an active participant – not only in satisfying set pieces that bookend the taut 90-minute performance, but as the promise of a matchday audience for those lucky enough to go pro. Pitch-perfect portrayals of football and friendship make scenes feel authentic to any local kickaround cage. This production, however, is a top-flight affair.
